What's Going On

Summer has certainly arrived in Northumberland now, with long sunny days but still pleasantly cool compared to more southerly areas of the country. This is great weather for walking in the Cheviot hills or exploring the coast, Holy Island and the Farnes. We still have a couple of week available in July and September: follow the link to our calendar or find it on our page on the Cottage Guide website.

October and November are great months for stargazing. Kielder Water and Forest Park and Northumberland National Park have been jointly awarded Gold Tier Dark Sky Park status. This new zone is to be called Northumberland International Dark Sky Park and it is the first of its kind in England, recognising that Northumberland's countryside is typified by brilliant starry skies, tranquil villages, and unspoilt hills and forests. Many visitors come to The Old School House in order to experience these tranquil and unspoilt surroundings. It's why we say please bring a torch!

The Forest View Inn Byrness is within easy walking distance of the Old School House, serves home cooked meals and is licensed, selling locally brewed hand pulled real ales, fine wines and malt whiskies. Our guests have also been impressed by their cooked breakfasts!

The Camien Cafe in Rochester is a short drive away and has free wifi.

The Redesdale Arms in Rochester is a cosy pub which serves excellent food and real ale.

Our cheeky visiting squirrel. (He shouldn't be eating the bird's peanuts; he has his own hazel nut feeder!). Red squirrels can be elusive, but some of our guests this summer (2018) reported seeing one outside the cottage every day.
